"You go to Mexico to get away with most of the prejudices - and what do they play everywhere? Mariachi, Mariachi, Mariachi. Ahhhh."
This days hilight was the daytrip to the Pyramids of Teotihuacan, including a stop at a place with some half a dozen churches.
So the first stop today was at a small place in Mexico City itself, where they show some little things from the Pyramids, where our tour guide gave a little introduction.
Right after that we visited the "Basilica de Guadalupe". The place is the most important religious one in Mexico and said to be the second most important one of the world, after the Vatican.
Not really my thing, but the old Basilica is worth a view, as it sunk a lot on the left side, which looks scary. That problem was the reason to built a new basilica right besides the old one, which now can contain up to 40.000 people...
After the Basilica stop (and the usual commercial part) we got back in the van to get to the pyramids. On the way there our guide talked a lot about Mexico City, its development and also about the places we passed.
Arriving in Teotihuacan you can see, from far away, that this place must be really huge (about 11square kilometers, according to our guide). We stopped at entrance 4 and walked towards the smaller Pyramid of the Moon, which is about 45m high, having a base area of 150x120m. On the way there, and through the whole day, we got really annoyed by the big number of vendors trying to sell cheap, ugly imitiations of stuff, always approaching you with a "Amigo, for you". Damn, I never saw an amigo there. Fortunately I am tall enough that many of them do try to get out of my way.
After the guide finished his (interesting) one hour tour we had another hour left for ourselve, to climb up the pyramids. We went on both of them, even if it was horrible work - Im not there that often, so it would be a loss not to do it.
Both Pyramids, the small Pyramid of the Moon and the big one, Pyramid of the Sun, give a very nice panoramic view, I hope the pictures and videos show a bit of it. By the way, the big pyramids is about 65m high and has a base area of 220x225m. We walked one time around it, looking at their backside, which is left original and not restored as the frontside.
After this horrible work (and after we found our parking place again) we had lunch in a (much to expensive) restaurant. Im sure the guides got the food without paying, just so they get all those tourists there. but food was good, so who cares, its vacation after all.
The trip was completed with another visit on the area, but this time the other site. The time we used to drive there, and the view up to the pyramids shows again how huge the area is.
On the way back it was very quiet in the Van, as most people were exhausted from the day. I took some pictures, to have some pics from the scenery and some turned out to be good, much better than I expected them to get, some others are pure shit. Getting back to the hotel shortly after 1800h we did not do much anymore this evening.
